General Selection Criteria for Pancreas Transplant

An experimental treatment that may provide long-term freedom from insulin therapy is transplantation of the so-called "islets of Langerhan's." These islets are found scattered throughout the pancreas and contain the cells responsible for making insulin. Islet transplantation requires a highly specialized team to separate the islets from the pancreas. Once separated from the pancreas, surgeons can transplant the islets without the need for a major operation, and with a much lower risk for complications.

At the present time, we have a collaborative relationship with the University of California, San Francisco to treat selected patients who are undergoing a pancreatic resection or complete removal of the pancreas for chronic pancreatitis to hopefully prevent the development of diabetes in these patients.
