Description of Clinical Program
Ten percent of all heart transplants (70 as of 8/96) performed at UCLA Medical Center are on patients under the age of 18; many are as young as a few months old.
Superior one-year survival rates are achieved, making the UCLA Pediatric Heart Transplant Program a center of referral for young patients diagnosed with a variety of cardiac disorders, including congenital, idiopathic, and viral cardiomyopathy.

UCLA offers an exclusive pediatric heart transplant clinic and a comprehensive team of pediatric transplant specialists who work collectively with distinguished faculty members from the Divisions of Neonatology, Obstetrics and Anesthesiology to provide optimal patient care.

In addition, UCLA has a very active cardiac assist device program which is used to successfully "bridge" very ill patients of all ages to cardiac transplantation. This assist program has also been used to reverse the cardiomyopathy of pediatric patients by allowing rest and recovery of the "injured" hearts without need for transplantation in some cases.

The pediatric cardiac transplant program is an integral part of the overall transplant program which is currently one of the largest in the world. As such, it benefits greatly from the knowledge and experience of its faculty and personnel who are available for patient consultation at anytime.
