Description of Clinical Program
The UCLA Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has a rich tradition of dedicated Thoracic Surgeons that provide expert surgical services to patients with all types of benign and malignant diseases of the chest. Nationally recognized for its leadership in treating conditions affecting the chest wall, esophagus, lungs, mediastinum, pleura and trachea, the Program offers patients treatments that are often not available elsewhere. More than 900 thoracic surgery operations are performed each year at UCLA and its affiliated hospitals.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following conditions and operations:
· Lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema
· Thoracic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis
· First rib resection for thoracic outlet syndrome
· Surgical removal of benign and malignant tumors
o Airway tumor
o Barrett’s esophagus
o Chest wall tumor
o Esophageal cancer
o Germ cell tumor
o Lung nodule, lung cancer, and lung metastasis
o Mediastinal tumor
o Mesothelioma
o Neurogenic tumor
o Sarcoma
o Thymoma and other thymic tumors
· Surgical repair of chest wall deformity: pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum
· Surgery for benign esophageal diseases: achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease
