Rudkin, George H. M.D.

Medical School Education
Institution: Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons -- New York
Year: 1990

Board Certified

George Henry Rudkin, MD completed both his general surgery and plastic surgery at UCLA. He has a strong research background in bone regeneration, skin cancer biology, and in the molecular biology of intercellular communication. He was a co-investigator in a $350,000 V.A. research grant and is a recipient of the Veteran's Administration Young Investigator's Career Award, which is a 3-year career development award from the Veteran's Administration. This includes salary support for 3 years and $20,000 per year for research activities. During his first 2 years, he is spending half of his time in the laboratory. Clinically he is assisting Dr. Miller in developing an aesthetic surgery program at UCLA.
Dr. Rudkin has a career development grant (level one) through the Veteran's Administration. This project is funded to study the effects of retinoids on intercellular communication in basal and squamous skin cancers. This 3-year project involves tissue culture as well as animal and human components. Preliminary data suggests that retinoic acids enhance intercellular communication via gap junctions in basal and squamous cell lines. These findings are being correlated with connexin mRNA expression and protein production. Animal and human components will be initiated in years 2 and 3.
Under the direction of Dr. Timothy Miller and Dr. Rudkin, the plastic surgery laboratory at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center - which recently received funding through a Merit Review Grant - is also actively engaged in studying the molecular biology of bone regeneration. The laboratory is staffed by Kenji Ishida, MS, Chi Chung, MD (a UCLA general surgery resident), and Wei Biao Huang, PhD.
