The Division of Pediatric Surgery, under the direction of James B. Atkinson, M.D., is the second largest children's surgery unit in the Los Angeles County. The Division of Pediatric Surgery has four full-time faculty members who provide extensive clinical experience to medical students, junior and senior residents in the General Surgery program. Working closely with the department of Pediatrics, the Division treats a wide variety of clinical problems in neonatology, pediatric gastroenterology, oncology, nephrology, thoracic surgery, and several other specialty areas.
In addition to the clinical programs and education, the Division of Pediatric Surgery has an active program in the pediatric surgical research sponsored by the Fubon Foundation.
Residents completing the five-year-program in General Surgery are eligible to apply for one of the 33 approved Pediatric Surgery Fellowship training programs in North America, leading to the Certificate of Special Qualification in Pediatric Surgery awarded by the American Board of Surgery. During the past ten years, eight residents completing the General Surgery program at UCLA have been accepted into Pediatric Surgery training programs in the United States. The Division of Pediatric Surgery at UCLA and its affiliated hospitals has one of the most active research laboratories in children's surgery in the United States. During the past ten years, the Division had more than then ten full-time research fellows; in addition, several undergraduate and medical students participate in research projects annually.
