Dr. Coito was trained in Portugal, having received a master’s degree in biochemistry in 1987 from Lisbon University, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in immunology from came emigrated to the United States where she completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Pathology at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. In 1996, she was appointed Instructor at Harvard Medical School. In July 1997, Dr. Coito was recruited to UCLA to work with Dr. Kupiec-Weglinski. She has received numerous awards, including the ASTP Faculty Development Award from the American Society of Transplant Physicians. Dr. Coito’s research interest is in the area of lymphocyte migration and the role of extracellular matrix proteins and cell surface receptors in host immune response after organ transplantation. Her findings have been published in several peer-reviewed immunology and transplantation journals.
