Dr. Charlene Williams is a faculty member at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in the Division of Head and Neck Surgery. In her role as Clinical Program Coordinator of the Mind-Body Medicine Group, Dr. Williams implements treatment programs focusing on psychological and mind-body healing. Her specialties include hypnosis, psychotherapy, and mindfulness meditation applied to treatment. Dr. Williams works collaboratively with patients, joining together to create the most effective treatment for each individual.

Areas of focus include using hypnosis and psychotherapy for:

  1. Preparing for surgery (reducing side effects and pain, accelerating healing)
  2. Decreasing side effects of cancer treatment and improving coping with cancer
  3. Integrating psychological and physical healing from chronic or life-threatening medical disorders
  4. Potentially improving healing and immune function
  5. Tinnitus treatment: facilitating symptom reduction
  6. Integrating healing and health with psychotherapeutic work tailored to the individual

Dr. Williams earned her doctorate in Psychology from the University of California at Los Angeles with specializations in Clinical Psychology and Health Psychology. During her graduate training, and later in her Postdoctoral Fellowship at UCLA Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Williams furthered her training and expertise with specializations in hypnosis and psychotherapy for individuals coping with cancer treatment and other chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Dr. Williams is well-versed in psychotherapy approaches ranging from cognitive-behavioral to psychodynamic, and utilizes an integrative framework to best meet the needs of the individual seeking help. Dr. Williams also has extensive training in psychoanalysis, and is completing her psychoanalytic training at the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies. Over the past several years, Dr. Williams has integrated mindfulness meditation (vipassana) based interventions that have proven effective.

With a psychological practice specializing in facilitating mind-body healing, Dr. Williams helps patients access and use their own internal healing resources. A wealth of research has illuminated the power of harnessing one's ability to focus and use hypnotic imagery to communicate with and help the body heal. Hypnosis has been found to provide significant benefit for people preparing for surgery, as well as for individuals with disorders ranging from tinnitus, pain syndromes, IBS, and asthma. Dr. Williams utilizes focused hypnotic techniques in combination with psychological work tailored specifically to the needs of the individual. Thus therapeutic work may range from brief, symptom-oriented treatment to deeper psychotherapeutic and healing work depending on the needs and preferences of each individual.

Dr. Williams consults with patients at the 200 UCLA Medical Plaza Building, Suite 550, and in her off-campus office in West Los Angeles. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Williams or for more information, please call (310) 442-9286 or (310) 825-3422 or e-mail: charlenewilliamsphd@yahoo.com
