Dr. Mehran received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1990 from Brown University in Providence, RI, where he was inducted into the Sigma Xi National Honorary Scientific Research Society. He subsequently attended medical school at Duke University in Durham, NC, receiving his M.D. degree in 1990. He completed his surgical residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. In 1999, Dr. Mehran joined a successful private practice group in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. However, a constant yearning for further surgical education took him back to "school" in 2002. He completed a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Hospitals in Weston and Naples, FL, where he underwent extensive training in all aspects of bariatric surgery as well as various other laparoscopic procedures. He subsequently joined the newly formed Minimally Invasive Section at UCLA's Department of Surgery in August 2003. He currently serves as the Director of Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Mehran is Board Certified in Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons (SLS), the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). He has authored several scientific in peer reviewed surgical journals and given multiple presentations at various regional and national meetings. In addition to laparoscopic bariatric surgery (Roux en-Y gastric bypass & sleeve gastrecotmy) his clinical interests also include minimally invasive inguinal, ventral & incisional herniorrhapy, cholecystectomy, and various other gastrointestinal surgeries.
